Question

Why do most athletes go broke within a few years of retiring?

Response

Most athletes go broke within a few years of retiring because they cannot maintain the lifestyle they lived while playing. When athletes are actively playing, they make substantial amounts of money, but once they retire, that source of income changes dramatically. Rather than adjusting their spending, many athletes try to keep the same expensive lifestyle going, which is impossible to sustain. Additionally, young athletes often focus on the wrong things—chains, cars, and false lifestyles—rather than understanding financial literacy, learning how to save and invest their money properly. Many don't educate themselves about finances early on because they rely entirely on their lawyers, agents, and financial advisors to handle everything, which means they never actually learn money management skills themselves.

Yeah, I think it's because they cannot maintain the lifestyle. People don't understand like we make so much money while we play and once you retire, this source of income won't be the same. And they try to keep the same lifestyle and it cannot be possible. The other thing that people do, young athletes, they focus on the chains, they focus on the cars, they focus on so much on this false reality, false lifestyle, man.

When a player when a athlete start playing so he doesn't know about financial literacy. He doesn't know how to save his money, invest his money, none of that at that age. When you come at 18 and in the NBA this is how it works. People provide you your lawyer, your agent, and your financial advisor. You come here and it's like, oh yeah, these are your people. These are the people you got to trust. These are the people that going to handle everything in your life. What does that do? That doesn't allow you to learn. And if you don't learn, you will always need them.
