Question

How did the Nigerian billionaires say they built their fortunes?

Response

The Nigerian wealth-builders in these interviews pointed to a few recurring themes. Several said wealth comes from serving and making money for others: one entrepreneur said that in Nigeria, if you don't make other people money, you don't get to make money, and that sustainable wealth comes from helping other people. A billionaire banker credited his rise to hard work, discipline, deferred gratification and sacrifice, and said that when luck arrives you must already be prepared to notice it. Another said that you have to be prepared, and that he chose not to buy a car for a long time so he could acquire property instead. The Dangote-style oil and gas and industrial founder emphasized focus, understanding the business deeply, and building a legacy, and said that when a deal is being negotiated you should understand what the other side wants. Many also credited faith in God, and the real estate developer stressed keeping your word and building a strong reputation, since your name opens doors before you enter a room.
